Welcome to the digital era, where debt collection has undergone significant transformation, presenting both unique challenges and opportunities for collection agencies.

This blog post delves into the intricacies of debt collection in today’s digital landscape, highlighting the role of online payment methods and data synchronization. Drawing insights from our recent webinar, “Debt Collection in the Digital Age”, hosted by PaymentVision and Beam Software, we explore strategies for effectively navigating this evolving environment.

Introduction to the Digital Shift

Bethany Hendrickson from Beam Software opened our webinar by emphasizing the dynamic nature of debt collection today. She stated, “Debt collection has evolved significantly, presenting both challenges and opportunities for collection agencies. In this webinar, we’ll delve into the unique dynamics of debt collection from online payment methods to payment and consumer information synchronization.”

Embracing Online Payment Methods

One of the critical aspects of modern debt collection is the adoption of various online payment methods. Scott Wittosch from PaymentVision elaborated on this by highlighting the importance of providing self-service options to consumers.

He noted, “You want to give your consumers the ability to self-service on as many opportunities and as many channels as possible.”

In today’s fast-paced world, consumers expect quick and efficient payment processes. Wittosch emphasized the need for speed, stating, “There is an expectation by your consumers current day that within an authentication screen right within an environment of navigating a payment portal about 30 seconds 30 to 35 seconds between them telling you who they are to seeing the data that you are presenting them.”

Ensuring Compliance and Security

Compliance with regulatory standards is paramount in the debt collection industry. Wittosch discussed the significance of meeting ADA compliance and other standards, warning, “Firms are unfortunately getting the short end of the stick when they’re not meeting those WCAG standards.”

Additionally, he highlighted the importance of efficient communication, asking, “Are you communicating with them in the means in which they’d like to be communicated with? Are we asking those questions?

Convenience Fees: A Balanced Approach

Convenience fees can be a valuable tool for managing costs associated with digital payment methods. However, it is crucial to navigate this area carefully to stay within regulatory boundaries. Wittosch explained, “It’s very important that we listen to what our consumers want, but we also need to understand all the pieces and parts that current security regulations bring along.”

Synchronizing Payments and Information

Scott and Tom Noble from Beam Software introduced the concept of synchronization between clients and agencies, a cornerstone of effective digital debt collection. Scott described, “What Payment Sync does is mirror those payments or post dates to the other entity in the relationship as they’re recorded on the account.”

Tom emphasized the benefits of this synchronization, noting, “In the “Beam-to-Beam” world where both client and agency are on Beam, the client can outsource accounts to the agency within seconds without exporting data, sending it to the agency by email or FTP, and then forcing the agency to load the accounts into their system.”

This type of operating connection with Beam Software has opened up debt collectors and debt buyers to a whole new synchronized world of faster and smarter business decisions.

Enhancing Compliance and Efficiency with InfoSync

Information synchronization, or InfoSync, is another critical tool for maintaining compliance and efficiency. Scott explained, “InfoSync really ensures that both sides of the transaction, the client and the agency, are working with the most current information about that consumer and their debt.”

He highlighted the practical benefits, such as more accurate talk-offs and reduced time spent on skip tracing, which enhances overall operational efficiency and in turn can produce attractive rates of return on debt owed.

Conclusion

The digital age offers numerous opportunities for debt collection agencies willing to embrace new technologies and methodologies. By leveraging online payment methods, ensuring compliance, and utilizing advanced synchronization tools like PaymentSync and InfoSync, collection agencies can navigate the complexities of modern debt collection with greater ease and efficiency.

As Tom Noble aptly put it, “Bottom line, we’re here to help make you successful in your ARM (accounts receivables management) endeavors.”
